Protein is an important macronutrient. It is essential for the development, growth and maintenance of almost every part of our body.  

Proteins are made up of amino acids. They are involved in the breakdown, storage and transportation of all of the nutrients we consume.

Although our body can manufacture certain amino acids by itself (non-essential), others it cannot (essential). These must be obtained either through food or supplements.

Our daily protein requirement depends on our weight and activity levels.  Recommendation is between 1 and 1.6g of protein per kg of body weight. (4)

Carbohydrates are one of the three vital macros, alongside protein and fat, required for metabolism and energy.

Carbohydrates are the precursor to glucose. This is used by our metabolism to produce energy providing molecules called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). (5)

Sodium, or salt, has quite a bad reputation in the world of health. But we do need some a certain level to stay alive.

Side Effects

There are no reports of any serious side effects from taking this product.

However, as you will be replacing meals with a liquid form of nutrition high in soy protein, you may notice the following side effects: bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, rash or itching.

Soy is best used for short term only, although this product is not intended to replace all meals long term anyway.

It goes without saying, for anyone with a soy allergy this meal replacement will not be suitable

Recommended Dosage

Soylent recommends you gradually ease into replacing meals with their products.

They suggest using Soylent products as a substitute for one meal a week, then increase the amount you replace over subsequent weeks.

This allows your body to acclimatize to the new food source. Once you are happy, Soylent states you may customize your intake however you like.


Soylent is an unique meal replacement which makes skipping the kitchen easy yet still nutritious.

We love how their formula is truly balanced and packed with all the protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals you need from a meal.

Their premade drinks are super convenient, so you do not need to worry about the hassle of mixing a shake if you don’t feel like it.

The only thing we can find missing from Soylent is their formula doesn’t include any probiotic, or ‘friendly’ bacteria to support digestion.

Although probiotics would not be classed as a nutrient per se, they are still vital to health. Therefore to truly cover everything it would have been a plus to see them included.

Overall, we feel Soylent is a great option for anyone who cares about their health, but doesn’t want to worry about preparing and cooking healthy meals.
