Omega XL Review: the omega-3 super oil

Omega XL is a fish oil supplement that is designed to help people with painful joints.

The manufacturer, Great Healthworks, advertises Omega XL as a “highly concentrated omega-3 super oil.”

Using a patented blend of 30 healthy fatty acids, Omega XL claims to contain up to 22 times more omega-3 fatty acids than other regular fish oils.

Our Omega Xl review will investigate some of the claims surrounding Omega XL and whether it’s really that much better than other omega-3 supplements.

What is Omega XL?

Omega XL is basically an omega-3 joint health supplement. Great HealthWorks advertise it as a ‘super oil’ which has been extracted from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna Canaliculus).

How to take Omega XL?

The recommended dosage is two softgels a day. Although the label states one serving as two capsules, you can split them, one in the morning and one in the evening. According to the website, a capsule can be pierced and mixed with food or liquid which will not compromise the effectiveness of the supplement.

Who should use Omega XL?

Suitable candidates for Omega XL supplements include adults who have joint inflammation or chronic pain due to inflammation. Anybody who suffers with limited mobility due to arthritis or similar conditions could use this supplement to support joint function.

How much does Omega XL cost?

Omega XL comes in jars of 60 soft gel capsules (one month’s supply) for $69.95. If you decide to join the subscription enrollment you can save a further $10. The official Omega XL website currently has a special introductory offer if signing up for the autoship program of two bottles of 60 capsules for $49.95. Every 30 days you will be charged the special price of $62.40 plus shipping and handling.

Is Omega XL legal?

Made from a blend of fish oils from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, there is nothing in this product that contravenes any drug control laws. Omega XL is an all natural product you can buy without prescription.

Is Omega XL safe?

Containing only natural ingredients, Omega XL is much safer than many over the counter pain medications. Fish oils tend to be a cleaner source of omega-3 fatty acids and are less likely to be contaminated with PCBs or mercury than fish meat.

Where to buy Omega XL?

Omega XL is available online from the official website of Great HealthWorks. The websites of Omega XL and their parent company offer several deals which all include a 90 day money-back guarantee on your initial order only. You can also purchase from trusted third party retailers and avoid the auto-ship program enrollment.

Does Omega XL really work?

Omega-3 fatty acids are nothing new when it comes to joint care and there’s no doubt in our mind that Omega XL will work for some people. Many of the ingredients, especially the green-lipped mussel extract have been proven to work. A study found runners who took PCSO-524 had less muscle damage and strength loss than those who took a placebo.(19)

Are there any Omega XL alternatives?

Omega-3 supplements have been recognized for their health benefits for many years. You can find our #1 fish oil recommendation here.

Omega XL is sold as a supplement for treating poor health joint but also has many other benefits for your body.

Taking Omega XL will offer you nutrition that can potentially ward off joint inflammation and various types of cancer. It will also improve your cardiovascular health.(1)

Reduces Inflammation

Long term or chronic inflammation contributes to almost every chronic Western disease and is a major cause of joint pain.

Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the production of molecules, cells and substances in the body linked with inflammation.(2)

Omega XL works as an anti-inflammatory for deprived joints. It will also help in treating  ripped cartilage in joint spaces and boost joint health.(3)

This may even slow down or prevent cases of osteoarthritis.

Supports Brain Function

The essential fatty acids EPA and DHA found in the formula will assist your body in proper function of the brain and eyes. (45)

Improves Heart Health

Another bonus from Omega XL is the help it offers in lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease.(6)

Omega XL claims to have a staggering amount of extra omega 3 than that of standard fish oil.  It has also been shown by many studies to cause a major reduction (15 to 30 percent) in triglycerides – a type of fat in your body.(7)

In addition omega-3s can raise your levels of “good” cholesterol known as HDL.(8)

Omega XL principal ingredients are listed as: green lipped mussel oil extract, extra virgin olive oil and vitamin E. A proprietary blend of 300 mg is found in each serving of two soft gel capsules.

Here we look closer into the ingredients:

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Olive oil has been scientifically shown to have many benefits for the human body and joint health. The predominant fatty acid (73 percent) is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid.

Oleic acid is believed to be effective in reducing inflammation. It can also have beneficial effects on the genes linked to certain cancers.(910)

Olive oil is additionally high in antioxidants. This can help fight inflammation and inhibit specific genes and proteins that drive inflammation.(11)

One of the key antioxidants is oleocanthal, this has been shown to work in a similar way to the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen.(12)

Vitamin E

Vitamin E found in Omega XL is a potent antioxidant which also has anti-inflammatory properties. (13)

Research has suggested an association with vitamin E supplementation and reduced brain inflammation. This could be beneficial for Alzheimer’s disease patients.(14)

Vitamin E may also improve individuals with chronic inflammation which often leads to joint pain. However, we have no idea how much is in this supplement to quantify the amounts.

Green-lipped Mussel Oil Extract

Green-lipped mussels are a type of shellfish found only of the shores of New Zealand,  in some of the purest water in the world.

They are much larger than regular mussels. The edges of the two shells, where they meet when closed together, are green and resemble a pair of green lips – hence the name. (15)

The mussels are first processed into a powder before a second process extracts the oils from this powder. The secondary process maximises the bioactive properties of the mussel powder and is then sold as perna canaliculus, or PCSO-524.

A study of patients with osteoarthritis of both the hip and knee benchmarked green lipped mussel oil against regular fish oil.

Patients who took the mussel oil for 12 weeks showed significant reductions in osteoarthritic pain while also recording improvements in joint mobility.(16)

There is also research which backs up claims that the oil from this mollusc has the ability to improve symptoms of asthma. This is something not commonly associated with fish oil supplements. (17)

Side Effects

Perhaps the biggest side effect of many fish oils, not just Omega XL, is gastric upset. For many people taking omega-3 or fish oil supplements, they can cause bloating and gas especially when initiating larger doses.

Belching will often leave a fishy taste in the mouth, although many of these unpleasant side effects can be prevented by freezing the fish oil supplements before you take them.

The official Omega XL website claims all proteins that cause shellfish allergies have been removed from the green-lipped mussels used in this supplement.

But if you do have a shellfish allergy it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider before using Omega XL. Minor side effects can be a skin rash with more serious reactions causing a swelling of the throat and difficulty in breathing.

Another potential side effect of omega-3 supplements is increased bleeding. This may initially appear as minor nose bleed or bruises on the skin, but you should notify your doctor if this occurs.

The FDA reports that doses of up to 3 grams a day of omega-3 is considered safe.(18)

Recommended Dosage

Using Omega XL is relatively simple as it comes in small, easy-to- swallow soft gel tablets.

You take two soft-gel tablets/capsules a day, as needed. Many people recommend taking the Omega XL with food to boost its absorption.

Omega XL is a standard omega-3 supplement but much more expensive than many other similar supplements.

With all natural ingredients it is safe to use and claims for the patented green-lipped mussel oil extract have been proven by science.

Unfortunately a proprietary blend shown on the label gives no indication of how much of each content is in the formula.

There are less expensive omega-3 supplements on the shelves on your local pharmacy or Walmart which tell you exactly what you are buying.
