As their name implies, Green Chef holds sustainability close to the heart of their service.

All of the packaging used to deliver your ingredients and recipe cards is completely reusable, recyclable or compostable. They also offset all carbon emissions which occur as a result of their operations, including transport and delivery of the recipe boxes.

Organic/GMO Free

Organic meats and produce is now widely considered to be the best option for your health.

Many people have become concerned about the potentially negative effects of hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, steroids and genetically modified ingredients held within their shopping carts.

Aside from health concerns, research has shown significant nutritional differences between organic and non-organic produce. Organic farming methods also have a much lower impact upon the local environment. (1,2)

What’s Included

In this section of our Green Chef review, we take a closer look at exactly what you can expect to receive from a Green Chef subscription:

Meal Plans

Green Chef offers seven different meal plans which suit all tastes and lifestyles.

The plans are as follows: Omnivore (a bit of everything), carnivore (meat based), gluten free, vegan, paleo (hunter gatherer), vegetarian and keto (low carb).

There are also two family plans available which include more servings per delivery. Only the carnivore and omnivore menus are available for family plans.

Each plan has a dedicated menu page on the website, where you can view past, present and upcoming weeks recipes.

There is no minimum commitment to any plan and you are able to substitute ingredients, skip meals or cancel all together easily and simply.

This is great for those who have busy, unpredictable schedules.

Sample Menu

There are new dishes each week, here is a sample of the recipes from recent weeks.

We have included one recipe from each of the plans below: omnivore, carnivore, gluten free, vegan, paleo, vegetarian and keto respectively.

Blackened creole tuna with rice, edamame, kidney bean and bell pepper salad.

Mandarin chicken salad with rice cakes, oranges, almonds and mango vinaigrette.

Steak and black rice ramen bowl with rainbow carrots, edamame, corn, ginger and sesame seeds.

Roasted sweet potato bowl with kale, quinoa, edamame and maple poppy seed dressing.

Paprika fennel chicken with grilled zucchini and bell pepper, kale salad.

Za’atar roasted veggies with feta, couscous and peas.

Mediterranean tuna with sauteed greens and veggies and lemon mint gremolata.

Special Requirements

Whilst Green Chef does offer dedicated meal plans for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free tastes, they cannot promise they will be allergen free.

This is because their ingredients are processed and packaged in a facility that also deals with common allergens.

Green Chef Ingredients

Of course, as the menu changes every week and Green Chef offer such a variety of meal plans, we couldn’t discuss every possible ingredient.

Therefore, we have examined the health benefits of some of the ingredients featured in our sample menu above:

Tuna

Tuna fish is a nutritionally dense, low fat, healthy protein source.

It is packed with vitamins, antioxidants and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, selenium, iron, B vitamins and niacin.

Tuna is also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which support heart health and reduce the risk of coronary artery disease whilst reducing cholesterol. (3,4)

It contains all the essential amino acids which are fundamental to muscle and tissue growth, as well as required body processes. (5)

Furthermore, chicken is crammed with vitamin B3, which is required for the efficient conversion of food into usable energy, especially energy from carbohydrates.

Vitamin B3 is also believed to be helpful for the reduction of bad cholesterol levels. (6)

Edamame

Edamame are basically boiled soybeans cooked and served in their pods. They originate from Japan and are a firm favorite for a side dish.

They can increase the strength of our immune system, promote a healthy weight, support heart health and strong bones. (7)

Edamame is also rich in protein and fiber which helps weight loss and digestive health. (8,9)

Almonds

Almonds are sweet tasting nuts, full of health boosting nutrients which support stable energy levels and brain health.

The most important of these nutrients are riboflavin and the amino acid l-carnitine.

Riboflavin helps to defend against anemia by enabling effective iron absorption. It also helps to balance energy levels. (10)

With regard to l-carnitine, there is promising evidence that it can protect against cognitive decline and even slow down the progress of alzheimer’s. (11)

Ginger

Ginger is a root spice that has been used extensively across the globe for both culinary and healing purposes. It is a great source of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates.

It contains an active compound called ‘gingerol’, which is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory known to relieve some of the pain of arthritis.

Furthermore, ginger can assist with weight loss by suppressing the appetite. (12)

Kale

Kale is a green leafy plant rich in nutrients. It is a particularly good source of vitamin K and omega-3 fatty acids.

Vitamin K is useful for diminishing inflammation, whilst omega-3’s are fantastic for heart and brain health. (13,14)

Moreover, kale is a great source of dietary fiber which encourages healthy digestion. (15)

Sesame Seeds

Sesame seeds are one of the oldest crops to be cultivated by humans. It is a particularly hardy and nutritious, which is why it has been farmed for thousands of years.

Sesame seeds contain magnesium which acts as a ‘vasodilator’, widening and relaxing blood vessels and thus reducing blood pressure and supporting heart health. (16)

Zucchini

Zucchini is a popular vegetable low in calories and high in nutrient content.

It is packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, carbohydrates and fiber.

Clinical research suggests zucchini is effective at regulating thyroid hormones and insulin levels. (17)

Couscous

Couscous is a commonly consumed staple in African culture.

It contains high quantities of the mineral selenium, a potent antioxidant. Selenium helps to cleanse our bloodstream from harmful compounds and boosts the immune system. (18)

Fennel

Fennel is a great source of potassium, which helps to reduce blood pressure and support the vascular system. (19)

It also is packed with iron and an amino acid known as ‘histidine’. This is required for adequate and healthy levels of hemoglobin in the bloodstream. (20)

Side Effects

There are very few side effects from using Green Chef.

The only real possibility would be gas, bloating or a changes in bowel movements due to an altered diet. These symptoms should disappear after you have given your body a short time to adjust.

If you already eat a varied and healthy diet, you shouldn’t experience any negative effects at all.

Summary

Green Chef is a organic based, sustainable meal delivery service which offers something for everyone. All the ingredients are delivered fresh, alongside easy to follow recipe cards.

We are especially impressed by their commitment to low impact packaging and 90% organic ingredients with every delivery. Also, the range of meal plans is one of the largest we have seen, catering to every lifestyle and diet we can think of.

The only downsides to Green Chef is their inability to cater to those with allergies and the current lack of options to mix and match across meal plans.

Overall though, we feel that Green Chef is a great choice of meal kit service. Especially for those who are interested in trying a different diet, or want to switch to an organic based lifestyle.
